The latest Minor League Game of the Week takes us to Cedar Rapids, Iowa … It’s April 18, 2006, and the Kernels are hosting the West Michigan Whitecaps. Top pitching prospect Nick Adenhart is on the mound, and doesn’t disappoint as he chases a perfect game early in the contest. Longtime Kernels broadcaster John Rodgers calls the action on KMRY 1450 AM in Cedar Rapids.
Also of interest is the pre-game show. Iowa broadcasting legend Bob Brooks tells how he interviewed rookie Jackie Robinson in Chicago despite the best efforts of the Brooklyn Dodgers to keep the press away from him. It was sixty years before this broadcast that Robinson made his professional debut.
